212 Black Speakers You Should Know, Fund, and Hire.

For generations, Black voices and influencers have been suppressed and overlooked. Black humans and Black communities are constantly fighting for an end to racial, social, and economic oppression. Over the last decade as I have built Wonder Women Tech, I have seen first-hand how very little society values black entrepreneurship, black innovation, and black voices.

I built a tech conference and global organization focused on representation, inclusion, and access from my living room, and have struggled to gain proper funding and support as my white peers in the industry. Over the years I have watched others who built their dreams around the same time as me, gain millions of dollars in budget, while I had to call in favors and pull strings to execute on the same level in state-of-the-art venues. Companies who shared their “commitment to diversity” would rather fund white humans talking about diversity than the actual diverse humans with real lived experiences.

At times it has felt that no amount of accolades I have received, or expertise I have gained, has been “enough.” I’ve had my pricing negotiated down in every single meeting. I am not alone. Millions of other black humans relate to my experiences. I have learned over time that the system is designed to fatigue black and brown people. Activism is a tiring thing, and those who stand on the forefront of change have to buckle themselves in for a very long and very exhausting ride. What I have also learned is most people will give up before they see real impact and change happen.

I’ve had the opportunity to connect with thousands of black humans in the course of my work, and to hear their stories, and to bear witness to their pain, their challenges, their triumphs, hopes, and dreams. They are my own. What is at the core of this story is that every black human wants to be seen. They desire to be valued, represented, celebrated, and provided every opportunity to succeed, to have access to funding and resources, and to be paid the same as their non-black counterparts.

Black history has shown us that we have stood on the backs of generations of people who have struggled to create change for black legacy.

Erasure is at the core of this plight. We struggle today to keep critical race theory in schools, to ensure that our black history is included in the storytelling our educators are engaging in with our children, and to keep movements and black-owned organizations fueled and funded. This year we’ve seen a Barnes and Noble Bookstore move “Black History Month” promotional literature to the third floor where the “social sciences are kept.”

We’ve become so far removed from embracing black culture in our everyday society that we have corporations designating our stories as social science–like an elective class we can choose to opt out of. Unfortunately, many do choose to opt out. As budgets are slashed that support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, and as programs are dismantled that ensure our safety, our education, and our success. Movements like #BlackLivesMatter are weaponized and deemed a rogue threat. We are forced to turn back the clocks and put a distinct pause on black economic growth.

Group of Black Speakers at the 2019 London Wonder Women Tech Summit

Celebrating the contributions of black innovators is an important part of our everyday history that we should immerse ourselves in 365 days of every year. At Wonder Women Tech, we celebrate our black communities every single day and we are committed to providing and building an ecosystem that will continue to highlight, celebrate, educate, and amplify our black humans in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, Math, Innovation, and entrepreneurship.

With Wonder Women Tech’s online and global platform, it is one of our goals to support and amplify Black business people, Black speakers, Black entrepreneurs and Black humans who innovate and impact. Wonder Women Tech is passionate about storytelling and perserving legacy. We are highlighting over 200 influential Black speakers who have shared their accomplishments, aspirations, successes, and stories on the Wonder Women Tech global stage.

We are out here building companies, creating movements, launching innovation, inventing products and solutions, and curating tech conferences.

These innovators each come from different parts of the world, have expertise in various industries, and all have a unique perspective on how we can work together to share ideas, cultivate belonging, maintain black legacy, and propel change.
